New York-PV flights

JetBlue airlines announced this week that it will begin direct flights between JFK airport in New York and Puerto Vallarta, starting in either January or February of 2022.

No jab for centenarian

Despite her advanced years and appearance, a 104-year-old woman from Mexico City was refused a Covid vaccine because her Unique Population Registry Code (CURP) mistakenly listed the year of her birth as 2016, instead of 1916.

Hotel room ablaze

More than 60 guests at the Fenix Hotel in downtown Guadalajara were evacuated Friday evening after a fIre broke out in a room on the fifth floor.  The blaze in the 11-story hotel started shortly before 11 p.m. No one was injured, although several guests were reportedly treated for shock.

City bus stabbing

A woman died Tuesday after being stabbed to death while riding on a Route 51 city bus in the Chapalita neighborhood of Guadalajara. According to witnesses, a man began to argue with the female passenger just prior to plunging a knife into the right side of her neck. The man, who was apparently Central American, appeared to be mentally unstable, some witnesses were later quoted as saying.

Mexico’s Oscar win

Sunday’s Oscar ceremony may have garnered the worst ever viewer ratings, but many in Mexico were watching avidly in one category, as Michelle Couttolenc, Jaime Baksht and Carlos Cortes – all Mexicans – won the award for Best Sound for the film “Sound of Metal.”
