Feministas: legitimate activists or criminal vandals?

Despite the disapproval of NGOs such as Amnesty International (AI), the Jalisco state government seems determined to prosecute seven female activists who defaced public property during a recent protest outside the Jalisco Education Department (SEP) headquarters in Guadalajara.

pg5b“In Jalisco we respect the right to the free expression of ideas, but we categorically reject the use of violence and I think I speak for the vast majority of [people in] Jalisco,” Governor Enrique Alfaro said this week.

Ten women were detained in the July 9 demonstration organized to highlight the lack of progress in an investigation into alleged child abuse at a Zapopan public school.

The fact that the women, all dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, broke the windows on the main door of the SEP building “put the physical integrity of people inside at risk,” the governor stated.
