Another muted homecoming for ‘La Generala’

The route the Virgin of Zapopan will take through Guadalajara on her traditional October 12 procession back to her ancestral home will not be announced until the morning of the event to avoid multitudes congregating in the streets.

pg5Cardinal José Francisco Robles Ortega, the archbishop of Guadalajara, urged the Catholic faithful to stay at home next Tuesday and “unite spiritually through the media” to view the annual Romeria – Latin America’s largest religious procession  honoring the revered corn-husk statue of the Virgin Mary.

In normal times, the procession draws more than a million people onto Guadalajara’s streets to witness hundreds of groups, including charros, honor guards from numerous Roman Catholic organizations, dancers in native costume, choirs and marching bands, accompany the iconic figure in a three-hour procession to its home in the Basilica of Zapopan.
