The Covid-19 surge caused by the Omicron variant kicked in this week as Jalisco recorded its highest ever daily confirmed case totals on Wednesday and Thursday: 2,247 and 2,506.
The previous high of 2,148 cases was registered on January 21, 2021.
The real number is certainly much higher, since many free testing sites, hospitals and laboratories, especially in Guadalajara, were turning people away this week due to a lack of materials, amid the heavy demand. Private laboratories also found themselves stretched, unable to fit in appointments for large numbers of people eager to be tested.
Many working people with Covid-like symptoms have complained that employers are making unreasonable demands that they take a test in order to get time off work, as well as return to work. Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS) facilities in Guadalajara have been inundated with people requiring tests, medical attention for respiratory ailments and sick-leave documentation.
