Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard has confirmed to members of his Morena party that he will be a candidate for the presidency in 2024.
His announcement came during a meeting of regional state legislators and mayors held last weekend at Expo Guadalajara.
Ebrard said his candidacy was really no secret, since “President Lopez Obrador has declared on five occasions” that Ebrard will be running.
Ebrard said he is aware that official campaigning does not start until 2024, but he will visit different regions of the country in his “own time” to listen to the demands of citizens.
The foreign minister also noted that early polls give him a strong lead in the race for the presidency, above his expected major challenger from within Morena, Claudia Sheinbaum, the current mayor of Mexico City, who, according to some reports, is AMLO’s favorite to succeed him.
