Input sought on Lopez Mateos chaos

If you have an opinion about how to fix the traffic snarl-ups on Guadalajara’s busiest thoroughfare, then the state government wants to hear from you.

pg5bA public consultation process aims to “generate a broad dialogue to identify the roots of the mobility problem that occurs in the south of the metropolitan area, especially on Avenida López Mateos, and from this find innovative solutions.”

There are several phases of the consultation process, which began at the end of November 2022 and will run until March.  To participate in the dialogue and voice an opinion, go to dialogoslopezmateos.jalisco.gob.mx. (English permitted.)

Meanwhile, around 20 civic groups have penned an open letter to the state government rejecting the idea of building a second tier on Lopez Mateos. One plan on the table envisions this upper level running from Plaza del Sol all the way to the Periferico (city beltway).

The groups opposing this plan, which include the Colectivo Ecologista de Jalisco, BiciBlanca, Víctimas de Violencia Vial, Vivienda Ya and the Observatorio Ciudadano para la Movilidad, argue that a second tier will only encourage the construction of even more subdivisions to the south of the city, thus adding to the number of vehicles entering the city each day. In their letter to the state government, the NGOs call for a halt to the issuing of permits for real estate developments that have largely been responsible for the escalation of traffic in this part of the metro area.
