(Top photo) As promised, around 130 brand-new garbage trucks rolled out onto the streets of Guadalajara on December 18, as the city council assumed control of trash collection and disposal after three decades of private companies managing the service.
Although some residents reported that their trash remained uncollected, Guadalajara Mayor Verónica Delgadillo explained that a few glitches were inevitable during the transition. However, she assured citizens that they would see significant improvements in the service within three months.
(Bottom photo) Delgadillo joined 1,300 volunteers on Saturday, December 14 to help clean up a 2.3-kilometer stretch of railway tracks alongside Avenida Inglaterra in Colonia Jardines del Bosque.
The initiative, known as “Saturday of Co-Responsibility,” brings together public officials and private citizens to undertake cleanup tasks in different parts of the municipality. “Workers, police officers, firefighters, students and neighbors are here, and we are all sowing a seed of awareness,” Delgadillo said. “The government is responsible for cleaning public spaces, but the people of Guadalajara also have to do their part.”
