“Malo para México—Malo para el Mundo.” Bad for Mexico—Bad for the World.
That was one of the messages reverberating through Guadalajara on April 5 as demonstrators joined the international “Hands Off” day of action—a coordinated protest movement opposing what many see as an increasingly authoritarian U.S. administration under President Donald Trump.
Across Mexico and the world, American citizens and their allies took to the streets in solidarity with millions who hit the streets in the U.S. The largest gathering took place in Ajijic, where about 400 people packed the town’s main plaza (see story page 1). The event, organized by Democrats Abroad Lake Chapala and members of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, drew from one of the largest concentrated expat populations in the world.
Meanwhile, in the Guadalajara metro area, close to 50 people participated in two separate demonstrations—both part of the global “Hands Off” day of action. The Democrats Abroad Guadalajara chapter organized outside the U.S. Consulate, while an Indivisible rally was held near the Minerva Glorieta.
