Book Day tribute to Rosario Castellanos

World Book Day was celebrated in Guadalajara with a group reading of the novel “Balón Canán” by Mexican author Rosario Castellanos on the esplanade of the University of Guadalajara’s Rectory building.

Balún Canán (1957) is a semi-autobiographical novel that focuses on the life of an indigenous woman, the social hierarchies of the region, and the harsh realities of Mexico’s indigenous communities.

Set in Chiapas, the book explores the clash between indigenous cultures and the dominant Mestizo society.  Castellanos was a prominent Mexican writer, poet and feminist, often regarded as one of the most significant literary figures of 20th-century Mexico.
