Amin Maalouf, an acclaimed Lebanese-French author and journalist best known for exploring themes of identity, cultural conflict and the Middle East, has been named the winner of the 2025 FIL Prize for Literature in Romance Languages.
The award, endowed with US$150,000, is presented each year at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL), the largest literary event in the Spanish-speaking world. Its 39th edition begins on November 29 at Expo Guadalajara.
In announcing its decision, the jury said Maalouf “holds an essential place in contemporary literature because he explores with great lucidity the fractures and fusions of the modern world,” noting that his novels and essays “explore memory and exile while rejecting nationalist or religious narrow-mindedness.”
