A series of reports and viral videos have revealed an unusual criminal phenomenon in Guadalajara, where alleged thieves are using the city’s extensive sewer system to vanish after committing robberies, earning them the nickname the “Tortugas Ninjas Tapatías” (Guadalajara’s Ninja Turtles).
According to multiple citizen reports and video evidence, individuals accused of stealing auto parts or robbing pedestrians have been seen quickly entering manhole covers (coladeras) to evade police. The pattern has been documented in various neighborhoods, including the historic center, La Loma, Artesanos, and, most recently, the Moderna and Americana colonies.
