Expatriate Jaliscineses in the United States have filed a petition with the state Congress to change the law so they will be able to vote for the next state governor.
Migrants send millions of dollars home to Jalisco each year and provide vital funds for major infrastructure projects in many towns and pueblos.
“It’s time that the effort and work that migrants do is recognized back home,” said Fernando Fonseca, president of the Jalisco Federation of Clubs of Northern California.
Around 350,000 Jalisco migrants are active members of expatriate organizations in the United States, he said.
Mexicans living abroad are able to vote for president but, as yet, not in state and municipal elections.
