Huichol art on view in Vancouver

Yarn paintings by the late Huichol artist and shaman Jose Benitez Sanchez  (1938-2009) are currently on exhibit at the the Art Gallery at Vancouver Island University.

The show, titled “Wixaritari, People Walking Towards Dawn,” will run until July 15 and is sponsored by Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General of Mexico in Vancouver.

Benitez Sanchez, whose indigenous name means the silent walker, was one of the last in a generation of shamans who devoted their lives to the wisdom of initiation and artistic creation.

The exhibit is curated by Gabriela Olmos, the assistant director of the Artes de Mexico magazine.
