US extends visa renewal period

Christopher Landau, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico,  announced through social media that the period for renewals for tourist visas for the United States has been increased from 12 to 24 months.

This means people with visas that have expired within the past two years will not have to reapply for a new visa, thus repeating the in-person interview process at the consulate.

Most renewals do not require in-person interviews with consular officers.

The U.S. Consulate General in Guadalajara suspended routine nonimmigant visa services on March 18, but a consular officer told this newspaper that applications for renewals are currently being received.

Previously, only requests for nonimmigrant visas for emergency situations were being considered.
