US follows Canada & UK, requiring negative tests prior to boarding flights

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that it will start requiring a negative viral Covid-19 test (PCR, NAAT or antigen) from all air passengers entering the United States, beginning January 26. The order applies to U.S. citizens as well as foreign travelers.

pg3a“This strategy is consistent with the current phase of the pandemic and more efficiently protects the health of Americans,” said the CDC in a statement.

The tests must be done within 72 hours prior to boarding flights. Airlines have been instructed to refuse boarding to anyone who chooses not to be tested.

Proof of immunization will  not be sufficient, the CDC said, because Covid vaccines have only been shown to prevent people from getting sick, not becoming infected.

The CDC also recommends that passengers get tested again three to five days after arrival, self-quarantining for seven days post-travel.

The CDC states the new requirement will prevent the import of fresh infection and help slow the spread of Covid-19.
