The Russian ambassador to Mexico, Víktor Koronelli, has thanked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for refusing to join countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.
The diplomat said it was refreshing that in today’s world “there are countries like China, India and Mexico that will never answer ‘yes sir’ on the orders of Uncle Sam.”
Koronelli was invited this week to the installation of the Mexico-Russian Federation Friendship Group in the federal Chamber of Deputies (lower house), which was attended by eight legislators: five from the Morena Party, two from the Partido de Trabajo and one from the PRI.
“Russia did not start this war, it is ending it,” Koronelli told the legislators in a brief address. “The bloody war against the inhabitants of Donbas has lasted for years, and all these years we have been asking the world community to fight against the systematic extermination of the population of this region.”
“I have no doubt that what is happening in these days will not affect Russia’s relations with Mexico in any way,” Koronelli said.
