Leaders mourn passing of UK’s Queen Elizabeth II

Tributes poured in after the announcement that Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, died Thursday, September 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96, after reigning for seven decades.

pg1bbFrom Mexico, UK Ambassador Jon Benjamin said that, “For more than 70 years, her work has promoted peace and friendship among all peoples.”

The Mexican ambassador in the UK, Josefa Gonzalez Blanco, called her “a profoundly important woman, and source of inspiration for many for so long.” President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also offered his condolences.

U.S. President Joe Biden said “her legacy will loom large in the pages of British history, and in the story of our world,” describing her as “a stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy who deepened the bedrock alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States.”  In total, Queen Elizabeth II met with 14 U.S. presidents.
