Survey shows sharp rise in US expats considering citizenship renunciation

A growing number of U.S. expats are considering renouncing their citizenship due to mounting emotional, financial and political costs, according to the 2025 Expat Trends Survey.

Nearly 50 percent of U.S. expats are seriously contemplating renunciation, marking a 63 percent rise from the previous year, the survey noted. Politics plays a significant role, with many citing dissatisfaction with U.S. government actions as a key motivator. Expats in certain countries, like India and the U.K., are especially likely to consider this step. Additionally, many expats feel disconnected from the U.S. government, with over half saying they don’t feel fairly represented.
