Recycling outfit suspends door-to-door pickups but sets up drop-off points

After a prominent lakeside recycling drop-off center closed last year due to rising transportation and labor costs, Alejandra Lazcano, the co-owner of Scrap Recyclers, the area’s remaining collector of recyclables, made a revealing comment to the Guadalajara Reporter.

“The financial concerns that caused (RCC) to close keep us mindful of our own precarious situation,” she said.

Recent increases in gasoline and other costs have now forced Lazcano and her husband/business partner Conrado Contreras Reynoso to drop their weekly door-to-door pickup of residential and commercial inorganic items.

A notice delivered to the company’s recycling clients this week announced the reduction in service: “We are not closing our doors, and because we can no longer pick up the recyclables, we now have three convenient drop-off points.”

Those who wish to reduce the volume of trash in area landfills can leave all nonorganic items at the following locations:

Ajijic: At Calle Juarez 52A where there is a container with the Scrap Recyclers logo at the garage. The gate is open Monday through Friday.

San Antonio Tlayacapan: The Scrap Recyclers Warehouse at Privada La Paz 7 (across from mini golf course). Open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Riberas del Pilar. At San Marcos 226 a container is available on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Scrap Recyclers accepts, sorts, categorizes and transports for processing the following materials and items:

Metals: All types of cans (aluminum, steel, tin and recycled), old pots and pans, aluminum foil, all other metal items.

Paper: Magazines, newspapers, books, notebooks, flyers and junk mail, shopping receipts, office paper.

Cardboard: All types of clean boxes and cardboard from tooth paste and medicine boxes to refrgerator and closet boxes.

Glass: All types and styles and colors of clean glass bottles, glasses and dishes and jars.

Plastic: In addition to milk and water bottles, Scrap Recyclers can handle six types of hard and soft plastic, including furniture, toys, and containers from cleaning supplies, cosmetics and lotions and plastic bags.

Electronics: Computers, printers, chargers, screens, cameras, keyboards, TVs, DVD players.

Contreras Reynosa added, “It’s unusual, but Scrap Recyclers even accepts and prepares larger, difficult items for recycling including plastic, wood and metal furniture, appliances, batteries and tires. Most people don’t realize that approximately 90 percent of the trash taken to the landfill could be recycled. Think of how that can help the earth. In addition to saving the land from being contaminated by the items, we can save money and energy.

“When we can realize the benefit, we’re more apt to participate. Think about it this way, recycling just one aluminum beer or soda can saves enough energy to operate a television for three hours.”
