A Chapala traffic department officer is behind bars while under investigation for a criminal charge of abetting in the flight of a prisoner following a highway collision.
The accident occurred late Friday, September 18 in La Floresta when a motorist at the wheel of a van crashed into a motorcycle, causing severe leg trauma to the minor age boy driving the two-wheeler. The driver of the van was detained at Chapala police headquarters until the suspect traffic cop appeared and ordered his release.
Authorities at the local Ministerio Público (district attorney’s office) report that the officer in question was taken into custody the following day and sent in front of a criminal court judge. His name has been reserved while the case is under consideration.
At press time, the driver who was presumably at fault had still not been located, while the injured youngster remained under hospital care.
