Referendum on town delegates still on hold

At the urging of citizens backed by members of the Chapala City Council, Mayor Javier Degollado has repeatedly pledged to hold public referendums to name permanent delegados (town administrators) for Ajijic, Atotonilquillo, San Antonio Tlayacapan, San Nicolas de Ibarra and Santa Cruz de la Soledad.

But the municipality’s chief executive seems to be in no hurry to get the ball rolling

On April 29, the council’s governance committee, headed by the mayor, was charged with drawing up guidelines for candidate registrations and voting procedures. Pre-scheduled committee meetings have been scrapped on two occasions so far, and a new date remains up in the air.

Under previous mayors, voting for delegados has been held within the first 60 days of the change of government, as dictated by municipal ordinances.
