Architecture students develop bright ideas for Chapala

Students from the University of Guadalajara’s School of Architecture swarmed the premises of Chapala City Hall on Friday, May 20 to exhibit 100 design projects to build or enhance public facilities in the town.

The majority of the displays were created as concepts for constructing a lake museum on the grounds of Cristiania Park to highlight Chapala’s natural attributes, in line with a new tourism attraction proposed by the local government. Others targeted plans for a building new cultural center, a cutting-edge municipal slaughterhouse and a major upgrade of the city’s public market.

The seventh- and eighth-semester architecture students worked individually or in teams over the last six months to develop their respective projects. Each was presented with illustrated story boards showing computer renderings or sketches of exterior designs, location diagrams and floor plans, along with written descriptions, and small scale 3-D models.

Impressed by the numerous fresh ideas conceived by the budding architects, Chapala Urban Development Director José Barajas indicated that some of the best concepts will be adopted in drawing up final blueprints for the government’s future public works projects.

The students have also worked up projections for improving local mobility infrastructure and refining the municipality’s urban development plans which will be put on exhibit Tuesday, May 31, noon, at the Centro Cultural González Gallo (former railway station).
