Hand-picked candidates sweep delegado elections

The five candidates considered to have run with tacit backing from Chapala city hall came out on top in the public referendums to designate town administrators (delegados) in Ajijic, Atotonilquillo, San Antonio Tlayacapan, San Nicolás de Ibarra and Santa Cruz de la Soledad held Sunday, June 5.

Ajijic voters favored Jesús “Chuni” Medeles Córdova as the man of choice. He racked up 635 votes among the 1,344 valid ballots cast. He defeated his closest rival, Cristina Gómez Padilla, by a margin of 114 votes

Acting delegado Miguel Angel Espinoza Corona – “Quito” -won by a landslide in San Antonio Tlayacapan with 758 votes, compared to 183 for sole opponent Moisés Rodríguez Amézquita.

The closest race of the day was in San Nicolás de Ibarra where Ana Luisa Raygoza Ibarra slid in for her fourth consecutive term, edging out José Alfredo Ortega Contreras by just 14 votes. 

Ema Sandoval López was ratified by the people of Santa Cruz de la Soledad, while Basilio Hernández Alarcón will take charge in Atotonilquillo.  

All five were sworn into office at a city council session on Thursday, June 9.  They will initiate or resume duties at their respective Delegación offices on Monday, June 13.
