Bank freezes city hall account

In another blow to the Chapala government’s finances, one of its bank accounts has been partially frozen to guarantee payment of an alleged 2.5-million-peso debt inherited from the previous municipal administration.

The lien on the Banorte account was ordered by a Chapala civil court judge on the basis of a mercantile suit lodged by an auto parts company claiming non-payment of a promissory note signed by Chapala’s former treasurer, chief legal representative and director of purchases.

According to current legal chief Isaac Trejo, the claim is doubtful since the document was not signed by former mayor Javier Degollado, nor was the expense authorized by the city council.

Pointing to another anomaly, he said that the outfit demanding payment, Autopartes J.E., is registered at the same Guadalajara address as several other companies listed as suppliers for the 2015-2018 government.
