Chapala forges ahead with public works

While regular business at Chapala City Hall is partially on standby due to the coronavirus situation, the local government is continuing its efforts to complete various community improvement projects.

pg16bWork crews are resuming completion of the rehabilitation of Calle Lázaro Cardenas in Chapala’s upper northwest sector after the project was temporarily suspended last month.

pg16dOn Monday, April 27, work was initiated to upgrade a 175-meter leg of the western segment of Calle Miguel Mártinez. Funded by the state government, the project will entail replacement of water and sewage lines, resurfacing the street with hydraulic concrete in place of cobblestones and building new sidewalks.

Repairs of damaged cobblestone streets in Ajijic and other satellite towns are also underway.

Meanwhile, the government reports significant progress on a total makeover of the interior of the Mercado Municipal, located adjacent to the Chapala plaza. Authorities have not indicated a projected finishing date that will allow the market merchants to pull up stakes from temporary quarters on the plaza to reoccupy their permanent stalls on the inside.

This is the first major top-to-bottom interior upgrade in the market’s history. The building has sustained structural damages over the years caused by an underground geological fault that runs across the center of town.
