The Ajijic Hiking Group has been disbanded, effective Wednesday, May 13, per an announcement posted on its Facebook page.
The grassroots group has evolved since 2005, growing over the years to provide guided treks two days each week for avid hikers of varied physical abilities.
Activities were suspended in mid-March after trails into the mountain range overlooking Lake Chapala were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It appears that local ejido and indigenous organizations that own most of the land intend to impose restrictions and fees for visitors once the trails are reopened.
