Jocotepec is in the throes of a worrisome health crisis, not from the dreaded coronavirus, but the common summer plague of dengue fever.
While the municipality registered two confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection as of June 3, and lost one inhabitant to a dose of toxic alcohol in the early days of May, it counted nearly two dozen dengue cases up to the epidemiologic week ending on May 22. Results from the latest laboratory tests are still pending.
The outbreak appears to be concentrated in the La Purisma and La Loma barrios in the municipal seat’s western sector.
In addition to carrying out medical screenings, state and local health authorities have also joined forces in launching a campaign to detect and quell the spread of the disease.
