Chapala government opens canine shelter

With a steady chorus of woofs and howls going on at his back, Chapala Mayor Moisés Anaya Aguilar presided at the opening of the Refugio Canino Municipal Tuesday, July 14.

pg1aThe creation of an official dog shelter is tied into the recent enactment of Chapala’s Animal Protection code, set up to operate as a holding facility for dogs that have been rescued from situations of mistreatment and abandonment. The animals placed there will be housed, fed and given veterinary care until they are given out for adoption to permanent homes at lakeside or abroad.

The refuge project was developed through a cooperative effort between Chapala’s Ecology Department and the NGO groups SOS Animal Chapala and Lakeside Friends of the Animals.

The local government provided the land, installation of basic infrastructure, labor for construction of the kennels, and ongoing maintenance.

Friends of the Animals contributed building materials, as well as initial and continuing medical services for incoming canines, such as treatment of illnesses, injuries and parasites, vaccinations and sterilization procedures.
