Jocotepec honors revered religious figure

Jocotepec’s traditional nine-day tribute to El Señor del Huaje will be pared down this year to comply with Covid-19 restrictions regarding large crowds at public events.

The giant statue of the crucified Christ, carved from a guaje tree and discovered more than 300 years ago in San Pedro Tesistán, is the figure of reverence housed in the small chapel standing across the street from the town’s Señor del Monte parish.

Festivities are scheduled to run from April 24 through May 2, reduced to daily celebrations of the Mass and rosary services, with limited admittance for parishioners. The customary street procession held on the final day, when throngs of the faithful accompany the king-size figure, has been cancelled. Instead, the novenario will culminate with a festive Mass in the atrium of the main church.
