Alerted to what appears to be an illegal intervention on Lake Chapala´s shoreline, around 100 protestors gathered Saturday, May 22 to demand government protection for the beach area of Alceseca located on Ajijic’s western outskirts.
Throughout the week, village residents had observed a backhoe and several large dump trucks operating from dusk and into the night to unearth and haul off loads of sand from below the water surface in a spot officially designated in the Zona Federal. The head of the crew, identified only by his first name, Albino, reportedly told witnesses that the sand was being removed to dig out space for the installation of a floating dock that would be connected to an adjacent property with a bridge. He said that the sand would be used to create a waterfront beach volleyball court at a location further to the west.
