The work of Chapala’s police and traffic departments is being enhanced with the acquisition of extra vehicles for their respective fleets.
Municipal traffic cops are already cruising the streets with the secondhand club cabin pickup and sleek patrol car that were put in their corral this month. Markings that include bands of black checks, a florescent yellow color scheme, insignia, and Vialidad Chapala painted in large letters, distinguish them from state traffic patrol trucks.
Police officers will soon sit at the wheels of two new heavy duty cruisers that the local government is lined up to purchase and put on the road in December, with two more to be bought next year.
The selected models, recommended by Seguridad Pública Commissar Sergio Conzuelo Ramírez, are the same type used by federal police that come with high-powered motors, high resistance bodies and tires that will hold up against the rough conditions of local roadways. Fully equipped with automatic transmissions, radios, flashing light turrets, sirens and other gadgets, they will cost somewhere between 690,000 and 850,000 pesos each.
