Ajijic fiestas pick up pace in final stretch

After getting off to a fairly tame start, Ajijic’s fiestas patronales have picked up some steam throughout this week. The village celebration in tribute to religious patron San Andrés (St. Andrew) is scheduled to culminate on Tuesday, November 30, but will not fully shut down until the end of next week.

pg15aThe central streets of Colón and Marcos Castellanos – running north-south in the immediate vicinity of the Ajijic plaza – will remain partially blocked to through traffic until Friday, December 3. The closed segments are currently occupied by fairground rides, food and drink stalls and street vendors.

Attendance at secular festivities centered at the main square has increased day by day, with the tone this year reminiscent of village customs of yesteryear. So far, musical entertainment has featured acoustic groups playing at the central bandstand, as was popular in earlier times, rather than the raucous bandas powered with high decibel speaker systems more common in recent years. The frequency of ear-splitting sky rockets fired off to herald the celebrations has also diminished notably over the first few days.
