City Hall addresses obligatory dog shelter relocation

Barely a heartbeat after the SOS Chapala Dog Rescue organization began howling about being evicted from the canine shelter they manage on the outskirts of Ajijic,

Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre announced that the local government is preparing to open a new facility to house mistreated and abandoned pups.

pg2On Monday, May 23, SOS issued a statement that the rescue group was on the verge of folding and could not accept any more dogs at the shelter. “After many attempts to collaborate with the municipal government, we’ve reached an impasse,” the missive stated. “The new government has made it clear that the shelter cannot remain in its current government-provided location. However, the government has been unable to provide alternative land or funding for replacement facilities. As a self-funded, volunteer-managed dog shelter, SOS does not have the capital to finance a land purchase and rebuild facilities. This leaves us with no alternative but to shut down our operation.”

The message went viral in numerous local Facebook groups, prompting a hailstorm of criticism directed at the Aguirre administration.
