As a first step towards solving recurrent deficiencies in solid waste collection services throughout the municipality, the Chapala government is launching a review of the productivity of Grupo Integral de Recolección y Reciclados de Occidente (GIRRSA), the private company contracted to collect the community’s trash and deliver it to a landfill facility in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos.
The verification of GIRRSA’s compliance with the terms of the concession contract was authorized by the city council during its June 20 session.
Results of the survey should be compiled in a period of four weeks, to include an inventory of the outfit’s fleet of garbage trucks, analysis of pickup routes and schedules, and weightage of trash deposited at the landfill.
GIRRSA currently bills the city approximately two million pesos per month for its services. That is aside from the fees paid to the GEN landfill to receive around 60 tons of trash generated daily in Chapala proper and its satellite towns.
Depending on the outcome of the survey, Chapala may decide to follow Jocotepec’s footsteps and consider revoking the concession deal.
