Chapala bustles on Día de la Mujer

Women in the Chapala area energetically embraced International Women’s Day, taking part in multiple events scheduled on Wednesday, March 8, highlighting the themes of women’s rights, gender equality, reproductive rights, and protection against acts of violence.

Female employees at City Hall began the day with a reading the Women’s Rights Manifesto led by Secretary General Lilia Alvarado Macías and Women`s Institute Director Alicia Medles Còrdova that stressed guarantees of equal opportunities, full and effective political participation, freedom from all forms discrimination and abuse. Later in the afternoon they were honored at a luncheon hosted by the local government.

At noon, distinguished female writers from the community gathered at the Centro de la Cutlura y las Artes auditorium for poetry readings selected for the occasion.

Día de la Mujer 8M activities capped off with an after-dark march down Avenida Madero with the participation of more than 100 young women, ending with a peaceful demonstration and speeches at the steps of City Hall, illuminated with purple lighting to mark the date.
