Chapala presents defense for Riberas sewage system

After February 2 meetings with authorities of the National Water Commission  (Conagua) and the federal Ministry of the Environment (Semarnat) in Guadalajara, Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre expressed confidence that the conflict over a sewage system project shut down in Riberas del Pilar a week earlier will be resolved favorably and eventually proceed as planned.

Chapala Simapa Director Antonio Monreal presented project plans and specifications of the materials to be used in developing sewage infrastructure for Riberas del Pilar, including starting with excavations to install a pipeline for transferring wastewater to the treatment plant in San Antonio Tlayacapan. According to the Chapala press office, the site is situated on the limits of property belonging to the municipal government and the shoreline federal zone under Conagua control and protection.

The federal officials indicated there was merit in the concept to prevent raw sewage from contaminating the area’s water table and Lake Chapala.  They requested the submission of an environmental impact study before deciding on whether to green light the project proposal.
