Residents of upper Ajijic are preparing for the annual celebration in honor of the neighborhood’s patron saint, San Sebastián Mártir. The festivities will span three days, beginning Saturday, January 18.
The heart of the celebration is Calle Emiliano Zapata, at the corner of Marcos Castellanos, where barrio families will partake in a unique blend of religious devotion, communal feasting and collective revelry.
Saturday’s activities begin at 5 p.m. with the unveiling of a new mural painted by Bruno Mariscal. This will be followed by a free tasting of Tachihual bread, made in rustic neighborhood bakeries, served with hot chocolate or cinnamon tea. A musical serenade will start at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, the festivities kick off at 6 p.m. with the arrival of the saint’s figure, which has been wounded. A greased pole laden with prizes will be set up for children at 7 p.m. Mariachi Juvenil Axixic will begin at 8 p.m., and at 10 p.m., toritos—mobile firework devices shaped like bulls—will be set off, sparking chaotic but festive charges through the streets.
