In a belated celebration of International Police Day (January 2), the Chapala government is organizing special events next weekend to honor the officers of the municipal public security force.
The internal commemoration, set for Saturday, February 8, will begin with an 8 a.m. Mass at San Francisco Parish, followed by a blessing of patrol vehicles. Officers will then gather at police headquarters for a promotion ceremony, the presentation of service and merit awards, the official handover of new patrol vehicles, and a breakfast reception.
The Comisaría de Seguridad Pública currently employs 60 men and 20 women, with two officers proficient in English. Recruitment efforts are underway to expand the force.
Another highlight of Police Day is the inaugural Carrera del Policía, a five-kilometer foot race scheduled for Sunday, February 9. The race will start at 8 a.m. in front of City Hall, following a route along Ramón Corona, Avenidas González Gallo and Pepe Guízar, before looping back to the starting line via Avenida Madero.
The event is open to 200 runners across two categories, each with male and female divisions. One category is exclusively for personnel from the police, traffic, and civil protection-fire departments, while the Open Category welcomes all other athletes. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers.
Registration costs 200 pesos and includes a competitor’s T-shirt, race bib, and souvenir medal. Kits will be distributed on Saturday, February 8, at the Comude Sports Council office, next to the municipal soccer field. For more information, visit Comude in person or call 33-1860-6060 (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).
