Mi México closing marks the end of an era

Mi México, the iconic boutique located in the heart of Ajijic, will close its tall wooden doors for a final time on Saturday, February 15.

The heart-breaking closing of Mi México comes at a moment when Ajijic’s prime business district is facing financial hardships and loss of identity at the core of the Pueblo Mágico.

The shop is recognized as one of the first in Mexico to specialize in Mexican folk art and fashions, and has stood as a landmark at the corner of Calles Colón and 16 de Septiembre for nearly five decades.

The business was forced to close in early September after local Civil Protection inspectors detected damages to the roof and interior caused by the heavy summer rains. It was sealed off as a precautionary measure a few days after the collapse of the roof at El Parián, Tlaquepaque’s renowned food and entertainment court.

Staff regained access to the property on December 5 to assess conditions inside and rescue Kiwi, the resident cat. The feline was promptly adopted by one of the neighbors who had assured its survival in captivity by supplying water and food through a gap in the doorway.
