Understanding dementia from first-hand experiences

On Monday, April 7, five courageous lakeside residents shared their personal journeys with early-stage dementia during the “To Whom I May Concern” reader’s theatre performance at St. Andrew’s Anglican Episcopal Church in Riberas del Pilar.

pg11aThe cast included Ron Howardson, Alan Saul, Barbara Lieberman, Cathy Bowen, and Robert English, who joined via Zoom from Texas. The performers took turns sharing poignant accounts of coping with early onset Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), all of which had been written down during weekly sessions of the Lakeside DayBreak Dementia support group that began in February.

Their reflections—on their first symptoms of MCI, the diagnosis, and the ways they, their caregivers, and loved ones navigate the changes in their daily lives—were compiled brilliantly into a script by the group’s scribe, Alicia Knox. She was on hand during the performance to ensure the readers felt comfortable and remained on track.
