Fallen heroes honored on Memorial Day

American Legion Post 7 and ANAVETS Mexico Unit 19 joined forces on Monday, May 26, to commemorate Memorial Day with a tribute to military personnel who died while serving in the United States and Canadian armed forces.

The day began with a solemn ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Chapala Municipal Cemetery. Gravesites in the main foreign section were decorated with flags and floral arrangements to honor the memory of 140 veterans who are either buried there or memorialized on its grounds.

Auxiliary Chaplain Sunshine Johnson offered the opening prayer. Following the presentation of the colors—featuring the flags of Mexico, the United States, Canada, and the American Legion—the national anthems of all three countries were played. Wreaths adorned with red, white, and blue flowers were placed in honor of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force. Chris Philipson then recited the iconic poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.

Cozzens concluded the program by emphasizing that diversity is a defining strength of the armed forces, made up of courageous men and women from many backgrounds.

The ceremony ended with Wayne Watson playing “Taps” on the trumpet, followed by a closing prayer read by Sarah Shirley of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.

Later in the day, Post 7 hosted its traditional Memorial Day luncheon at its Chapala headquarters. The gathering featured an all-American menu, live music, and entertainment for members and guests.
