Quince festivals span two weekends

The neighboring communities of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos and Atotonilquillo are celebrating the local quince harvest season in tandem, with separate festivals running from Friday, August 1, through Sunday, August 10.

While Ixtlahuacán is the seat of a sprawling municipality, Atotonilquillo is a modest rural village—Chapala’s most distant delegation—commonly referred to simply as Atoto. Inhabitants of both towns have been cultivating membrillo (quince) since the tangy fruit was introduced to the region during the Colonial era by Franciscan missionaries.
