Last weekend, 16 elderly citizens of the Chapala municipality were reunited with family living in southern California after obtaining visitor visas allowing them to travel to the United States.
The group of seniors was accompanied by an entourage of Chapala government officials led by Mayor Alejandro Aguirre Curiel, both during their flight north and at a heart-warming reception with loved ones held in the Los Angeles suburb of Pico Rivera.
Some of the travelers had not seen their adult children for as long as 30 years. Many were meeting and embracing grandchildren and great-grandchildren for the first time.
Pico Rivera has a large Latino population, including hundreds of Chapala natives and their descendants. The two cities formalized a Sister City relationship in June 2024.
