In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence, Chapala Mayor Alejandro Aguirre and the Mexican Association of U.S. Government Scholarship Alumni (AMEB Occidente) co-hosted a heart-warming celebration of international cooperation at a ceremony held Wednesday, June 10 at the Centro Cultural Ajijic, with U.S. Consul General Amy Scanlon attending as honorary diplomatic guest.
The motive of the event was to formally recognize several lakeside expatriate residents and organizations known for their significant contributions to fostering cross-cultural understanding, collaboration and bonds of friendship among Mexican, American and Canadian residents in the Lake Chapala region.

Local organizations saluted at the events were ANAVETS Unit 19 and American Legion Post 7. Individuals receiving certificates of appreciation for good works in the community included Steve Balfour, Katherine Bates, Lydia Bowden, Jack Knudsen, Alan Mendelssohn, Cathey Merrill, Aurora Michel, Patrick O’Heffernan, Dale Palfrey, Sheila and Graham Paul, George Radford, Michele Willis, and a posthumous award for Tony Wilshere.
