Racist Facebook post on soccer star spells end to politician’s career

A state politician who referred to Brazilian soccer ace Ronaldinho –  the 34-year-old former Barcelona star signed recently by Liga MX team Queretero – as “an ape” has been ditched by the National Action Party (PAN).

Carlos Treviño received a barrage of criticism after posting on his Facebook page: “I try to be tolerant but I hate football and the dumbing down it produces. I hate it even more because people block up the streets, making me spend two hours to get home … and all this just to watch an ape. A Brazilian, but an ape nonetheless.”

PAN chiefs immediately distanced themselves from Treviño’s comments and later announced that he had been expelled from the party.

Ronaldinho, once considered the world’s best soccer player, made an inauspicious debut for Queretero on Wednesday in a Copa MX game against Tigres of Monterrey, missing a penalty in a 0-1 defeat.

Guadalajara soccer fans will get the chance to see Ronaldinho in action this weekend when the Chivas take on Queretero in a regular Liga MX game at the Omnilife Stadium in Guadalajara at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 21.
