Mexico seeks recapture of freed drug lord

A Mexican court has reversed the 2013 ruling that freed drug lord Caro Quintero from a Guadalajara maximum security prison and has again declared him responsible for the kidnap and murder of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent, Enrique Camarena.

However, the whereabouts of the 62-year-old Caro Quintero are now unknown, although it is believed that he is hiding in the mountainous state of Sinaloa, along with other wanted drug figures.

The U.S. government has been pressuring the Mexican authorities to recapture the former cartel leader.

“He is a fugitive, and we remain committed to seeing Caro-Quintero incarcerated for the heinous crimes he committed,” said Department of Justice spokesman Peter Carr. “We will continue to work with our Mexican counterparts to ensure that he does not escape justice.”

The U.S. State Department is offering a reward of up to $U.S. 5 million for information leading to his arrest.
