Famed athlete/senator beaten by four men

Mexican senator and Olympic silver medalist Ana Gabriela Guevara has posted on social media photographs of injuries she sustained during a road rage attack by four men on the outskirts of Mexico City last weekend.

The athlete turned left-wing politician was riding her motorbike, along with a passenger, when she was bumped by a SUV. When she remonstrated with the driver, four men got out of the vehicle and began to punch her, knocking her to the ground, where they continued to kick her. The passenger escaped with only a few bruises.

According to news reports, Guevara required surgery and had a plate inserted in the right-hand side of her face.

At a press conference Tuesday, a tearful Guevara, who won the silver medal in the 400 meters in the 2004 Athens Olympics, called the men who attacked her “cowards” and demanded stronger action to confront violence against women in Mexico.

Guevara said she would continue to post images of her recovery to maintain momentum in the struggle for gender rights.
