Seguro Popular to disappear on January 1

2020 will see a major change in the way health care services are delivered to a large segment of the population in Mexico.

The launch of the Instituto de Salud para el Bienestar (Insabi) on January 1 will coincide with the disappearance of the Seguro Popular insurance program.

Federal legislators approved replacing Seguro Popular with Insabi in November.

Insabi will be a decentralized body whose aim will be to assist and finance the federal Health Ministry in providing free services and medicines to the segment of Mexico’s population that does not count on insurance through either the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS) or Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE) for government employees. The number of Mexicans without insurance is estimated at just over 60 million.
