Public school students under lockdown are ‘Learning at Home’

All being well, Mexico’s quarter of a million schools will reopen on June 1, and the annual cycle will be extended to July 17, federal Education Minister Esteban Montezuma has announced.

The start date could be brought forward to May 17 in some municipalities without Covid-19 cases. The summer break will be taken as normal, Montezuma said.

While public schools in Mexico – unlike their private counterparts – are not equipped to set up virtual classes during the lockdown, education authorities are providing resources so that students can continue to study at home and don not fall behind.

Monday, April 20, Mexico’s Educaction Ministry (SEP) started its Aprende en Casa (Learning at Home) program, which sees classes following the national academic syllabus for pre-school, primary and secondary school students broadcast on two national television stations, from Monday to Friday, until June 1.
