Passenger traffic at the Guadalajara International Airport rebounded by 155 percent in June, with 316,700 travelers registered during the month, compared with 124,300 in May, according to data released by the Pacific Airport Group (GAP), operators of the airport and 11 others in western Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Tijuana.
Nonetheless, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on GAP’s operations is still considerable, with passenger traffic at the Guadalajara airport last month down 75 percent compared with June, 2019, when 1.26 million passengers passed through the facility.
Puerto Vallarta fared even worse in June, with passenger traffic down by 90 percent. The total of 35,000 passengers, however, was an improvement on May, when a mere 12,600 travelers were registered at the airport.
Riviera Maya
Further south in Mexico, the state of Quintana Roo – home to Cancun and the Riviera Maya – is reporting 70 daily flight arrivals, compared to 250 in July last year, according to Darío Flota, general director of the state’s Tourism Promotion Council.
During June, hotel occupancy in the Riviera Maya averaged 20 percent. While, there are still no flights from Europe or South America, connections to and from Canada restarted only this month. Access to Cancun from domestic locations and the United States has been available throughout the pandemic.
